The black coloration of Ayam Cemani is caused by a genetic trait called fibromelanosis, which causes excess pigmentation in the chicken’s tissues. This trait is unique to the breed and is not found in any other chicken breed.
In addition to its appearance, Ayam Cemani is also known for its hardiness and adaptability. They are able to withstand a wide range of temperatures and weather conditions, making them well-suited for backyard chicken keeping in many regions.
Due to their rarity and unique characteristics, Ayam Cemani chickens can be quite expensive. They are primarily kept as pets or for exhibition purposes, although some breeders also use them for meat or egg production.
Ayam Cemani (1 week old chicks)
The process begins with the founding breeder stock here in our trusted breeding program. The adults are fed a high quailty diet, high in omegas, as well as vitamin and mineral supplements, to ensure the health and necessary nutrition is being passed on from the mothers to the eggs. Those eggs are then delicately collected, incubated, monitored, and finally hatched in intricately planned micro-batches. The pure-black baby chicks are carefully inspected, head to toe, and hand-selected after they hatch. Remember, these chicks are the product of years of breeding, testing lineages, and selecting only the finest genetics that have moved forward in the program. Therefore, we ONLY sell the darkest and highest quality chicks. Each year, we only release a limited # of chicks.

These females have been started for you and are 16 to 20 weeks of age. They have been fed 24% protein starter/grower crumbles and should be kept on starter/grower feed until they begin to lay at approximately 20 to 25 weeks. At 16 weeks old, they are mostly feathered out, so they won’t require a heat lamp as long as they are kept dry and out of the wind.

The one trademark quality of the Ayam Cemani is that both the roosters and hens are entirely black. They have an iridescent hue to their feathering, making them shine brilliantly in the sun.
